Knowledge Seeking Edition: Personalize your feed, Discover unique perspectives, communities & more + Inspiring conversations about IWD & AI@Work

Every few weeks, I share new products and experiments that seem to be working — or not!— to give you some ideas for what we’re building, why we’re building it, and how we operate; I’d love your feedback on everything! – Tomer

As March draws to a close, I wanted to take a moment to honor Women's History Month. The outpouring of support and celebration from the LinkedIn community has been nothing short of inspiring, with record-breaking engagement on a variety of pertinent topics worldwide. These include business leaders recognizing International Women's Day in the US, addressing salary negotiation in France, promoting empowerment and allyship in Germany, shattering the glass ceiling in Spain, and discussing challenges faced by women-led startups in the Middle East. Such conversations not only demonstrate solidarity but also provide valuable insights into how we can progress towards a more inclusive and equitable society for everyone.

In today's edition, we concentrate on the most frequent and widespread reason professionals turn to LinkedIn daily — keeping up-to-date with their professional community & interests. It was authored by Heidi Wang, our Director of Product, who shares several enhancements we're implementing to elevate the experience for those seeking to stay informed and engaged with the professional conversations that matter most to them. From people, topics, and trends tailored to your professional interests, to expert insights and input on unique perspectives in your field, we're dedicated to ensuring LinkedIn remains your go-to platform for meaningful professional connections and conversations.

Now, on to our product updates:

1. Orienting your feed around what matters to you

We asked you what content you find most valuable on LinkedIn, and based on what you told us, we’re making some changes to better personalize your feed.

First, we’re putting a greater emphasis on topics that are interesting and relevant to you professionally. If someone in your network likes a post or comments on it, we’ll include that post in your feed if it’s relevant to you, i.e. if it helps you gain knowledge or skills that you would find valuable professionally.

In addition, you’ll see more posts from people who matter most to you. For example, people you know (your connections) so you never miss an opportunity to nurture those relationships when they hit professional milestones or when there’s an opportunity to support or reconnect with them. Another example is seeing posts from the experts you trust (the people & pages you follow) so you can hear what’s top-of-mind for them and gain insights.

2. Search, discover & go deeper on topics you care most about -- posts, newsletters, groups, events, and more

When you want to learn more about a topic that matters to you, Search is the easiest way to get started. Now, when you search for a topic, we’ll show you more valuable posts from credible individuals that will help you dive deeper. From there, you can use the search filters and sorting to further refine what you’re looking for. You’ll discover all of what LinkedIn has to offer – newsletters from subject-matter experts, interest-based groups, events, courses, and storylines that cover recent trending news. Even when you don’t know exactly what you’re looking for, Search will surface today’s timely topics with “Try searching for” and “News & views,” so you can stay current.

Let’s say you’ve been hearing a lot about ChatGPT, and you want to get plugged into that broader conversation. You can search for ChatGPT to start learning. Then, after reading the latest buzz around the topic, you can filter for “Events” to find richer ways to engage with others who are also interested in ChatGPT.

Searching for topics can be a powerful tool for you to discover more of what interests you – from Precision Medicine to Real Estate Investing to anything else!

3. Unlocking knowledge from the world’s professionals

We face work-related problems every day – How do I ask for a promotion? How do I build a great business plan as a first-year real estate agent? What should I be learning to be a good nurse practitioner 5 years from now? There are many “right” answers to these kinds of questions, so getting multiple reputable opinions is the key to helping you make informed decisions and move forward.

Together, on LinkedIn, we have an incredible amount of knowledge among us (~10 billion years of work experience, collectively!). Recently, we launched collaborative articles, which will give every member easy access to the collective knowledge of the world’s professionals.

First, we publish conversation starters, powered by AI and by our editorial team. Then, we identify skilled experts and invite them to come together to collaboratively add their insights and anecdotes. Any member can leverage these collaborative articles to help them get answers whenever they encounter work-related questions. We are now in the process of ramping it so stay tuned for more updates.

4. Suggested posts, to help you discover more of what interests you

In the last year, we’ve seen a 2x increase in people engaging in posts sharing knowledge, ideas, and support. There are many rich conversations happening across LinkedIn, but it’s hard to know what you’re missing out on unless you follow the right conversations. To help you discover more relevant content that you might not otherwise know about, we are testing Suggested Posts in your Feed. With Suggested posts, we’ll do the heavy lifting to find out what’s trending amongst professionals in your field and surface great conversations on topics that might be very relevant to you.

5. Controls to tell us what you like (or don’t!), so we can continuously improve your experience

Your Feed should only show you content and topics that matter most to you professionally. To ensure it is most relevant to you, we need your help. You may see a short survey in the feed that asks you if a post was valuable, and you can tell us why or why not. Your response helps us understand you better and improve your feed accordingly.

In addition, we’ve also made it easier for you to tell us when we got it wrong. With the “X” button on every post, it is now easier than ever to hide the posts that you don’t want to see. When you tell us you don’t want to see something, it helps us improve the feed for you, and it helps us build a safer, more trustworthy community for everyone.

Tomer Cohen I'm so damn tired of all these social network algorithms manipulating my feed to get me to spend more time on their platform. If I like or engage with someone's content, doesn't mean that's the only content I want to see or that I even want to see more of it over anyone else's posts. I've quit and boycotted all of Meta's networks for this very reason. If I'm connected to someone, I want to see their content. Not just the ones I engage with. Or what your robots assume I'm interested in. Otherwise, what's the point of having connections, if the damn algorithm doesn't want to show me their content. I've been using LinkedIn forever and over the years I've gone from having tens of thousand of impressions and hundreds of likes and comments to barely showing up in the feeds of people I'm connected to. What gives man?! 🛑 STOP trying to game people's brains and let me see posts from all my contacts chronologically when they post it. Please for the love of God and all that is holy. Please don't let Linkedin become yet another soul sucking sellout platform. Its the last social platform I actually care about.

Hey Tomer, thanks for sharing this. I’ve talked with dozens of “influencers” over the past few weeks and everyone has been experiencing big drops in engagement. I’ve also polled people who follow me on here with varying numbers of followers and a majority of people are echoing the same. Can you share where things are at with the algorithm overhaul? Is what everyone is experiencing the new normal? Are we in a transition period where things are going to change coming up? Anything you can share would be helpful, thank you!
